In the UK (and some other countries) our cords are fused so that if you overload them the fuse will blow so this isn't an issue. But another thing to watch out for (and this applies everywhere) is if the plug is a bit loose you can get sparking (which you may hear as a hissing noise or see it).
This is dangerous too and can cause fires etc. If a cord is making noises like that or sparking then throw it out *unless it can be repaired by a competant person. This tends to happen on sockets that get heavy use or where inappropriate plugs have been inserted which bends them out of shape.
