The times were different, but the KKK blew up schools, churches and personal homes. They lynched men, women and children by hanging or shooting them, some they burned alive. They kept souvenirs of their kills; fingers, toes, private parts, skin. They did these things to keep people from voting, integrating towns or schools, even for befriending each other. And most states refused to even pass anti-lynching legislation. So it's something you may not be able to imagine having happened in this country, but there are some parallels.
