should children start active shooter training drills in the USA ?

How many times a year and what would that program look like? If you are against active shooter drills but for tornado or fire drills why one and not the other?

With the situation being what it is, children should be on alert as soon as they can understand what it means. When I was a child in the 60s, we had duck and cover drills because of the possibility of a nuclear attack, and it was understood that our youth wouldn’t save us. School shooters have proven they won’t spare small children, either.

My cousin recently retired from teaching in the "inner city", and said, "our schools have been equipped with metal detectors and security guards for decades now because of gang activity. We haven’t had any school shootings comparable to Uvalde, Columbine or Newtown. It’s kinda saying something when schools in the "hood" are suddenly safer than in the suburbs." 🙁

@bijouxbroussard I'm curious. Nobody's ever given me a straight answer. Where did the schools get nuke proof desks?
@LordShadowfire That was something they really got wrong. We would’ve simply been piles of ashes, if that. We knew this much from Hiroshima.

@bijouxbroussard your point of
as soon as they can understand what it means
is solid.

Had metal detectors in some schools in my school distrct for the same reason---to alert sutdents and staff to potential active shooters.

It took a kid sneaking a handgun into class and killing himself in front of a girl he liked (but who said no to him) in order for the idea of metal detectors made it past the school board. Those kids got lucky. He only shot himself.

But realistically all schools at all levels should have metal detectors ---at this point given our culture and climate it is common sense. As common sense as putting seat belts in cars.
