It occurred when I was on my way to work and had my radio off. I was always the first person in and was making coffee when I heard a phone ring... it was in the adjoining conference room and thinking it had to be someone who knew I'd be there, I answered it.
It was a woman I had been dating and who had stayed at my place the night before... she was still there and had seen it on television and was calling me in a panic because her sister lived in Manhattan and she couldn't get her on the phone.
It took me a bit to understand what she was telling me and then when I got it, I turned on the TV in the conference room.
She stayed on the phone crying and I stood there in shock, then anger, then shock and disbelief.

@TryingtoLava I did, and it took a couple of days for the magnitude of the event to sink in. Luckily her sister wasn't harmed, and at least that turned out okay.
