I played along with the wife and occasionally my buddy and even sometimes the stepson for several years after the game first came out in 2004. Maybe until 2007 or 2008.

@DunningKruger those were the best years of the game!

@AlittleBitGenX Did you ever play Ultima Online? I had a group of friends that played that a lot in the late '90s.

@DunningKruger no I never played. It was fun?

@AlittleBitGenX It was fun, but I suspect I enjoyed it mostly because of the guys I played with. A couple of them were admins at a computer lab, so they would set up characters and build them up using scripts so we didn't have to go out in the woods and kill rabbits or what not for hours in order to get a playable character. Because of the 2.5D map, you could position buildings to give your group a little courtyard that you could teleport into without risking being hit by raiders lying in wait. And because the game allowed PVP, it was great fun to go up against a group of player characters tagged as murderers, so you could kill them without being flagged as a murderer yourself. A very different vibe from WoW.

@DunningKruger oh that sounds like a lot of fun! Playing with a group of friends is always the best. We have a group we play a lot of games with too
