What’s the relationship between Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong?

Are they related? Are they dating? I don’t think it’s ever explained in any of the instructions manuals for the three SNES games.

They did once, but it went south quite quickly. I believe they decided to put their grievances aside and work together for the game's sake.
