Can anyone help me find this term in video game design?

I heard a game design term once. It described the difference between a skill that a player unlocks and a skill that a player learns themselves.

Another way to put it is it's the difference between a skill that's specifically coded into the game and a skill that the player has to implement themselves through complex inputs. The developers may not have even anticipated it.

It may have been "hard skill" and "soft skill" but I just looked those up and I'm having no luck.

Intrinsic and extrinsic progression?

@Fishy I'll save this page so I can watch the video later. In the meantime, can you give me a brief definition?

@SinlessOnslaught Intrinsic is sorta like the skills a player learns and those skills stay with them... Like Terraria where you use the mechanics to do what you want... sorta like you make up your own tasks as you play the game

and the more you play the game, the more you skill up as a gamer

(the reward is enjoying the journey of completing the task)

Extrinsic, is more like a specific task within the game that a player will complete because the game devs put it there

(the reward is some sort of in game prize like a token, a customisable item, extra character abilities etc)
