I’ve witnessed a few actual accidents, but one weekend when the streets were fairly deserted, I was headed to the store and this older teenager was walking in the street. I don’t know why I bothered, but I said, "be careful, people drive crazy around here."
The kid flipped me off. I shrugged, kept going.
A driver came around the corner, hit the boy and kept going. I ran over to him, he insisted that he wasn’t hurt, that the car had just bumped him. I offered to call someone for him, he insisted that it wasn’t necessary, and no, he didn’t want the police called. I helped him up and he went into one of the stores—after thanking me for coming to see about him and apologizing for the hand gesture.
