Guess what I did!?

Locked my keys in the car with my toddler at a gas station 🤦🏻‍♀ the gas station guy was really nice, he's always super nice to me, and he called 911 because I didn't have AAA or anything and we couldn't figure it out on our own. There was another guy parked next to me trying to help and letting me use his phone. The fire department came, and that's what triggered my son crying. They parked too far out of sight and he couldn't see the fire twuck 🤣 as soon as they got the door open I ran to his side and got him out, he basically ignored me and went straight to the fire truck. He is so adorable. He LOVES them and the firefighters were super kind and put him in the truck, gave him a tour and a hat and everything. He was dancing he was so happy and it was THE CUTEST! But I sure felt like a ding dong. Can't believe I did that...the female assured me it happens a lot and everyone does it, she's done it, etc. idk I was still pretty embarrassed! It was quite a scene.

Right as I read this, there is a locksmith sorting out my car!

It has a mechanical lock on the driver's door, fuel-filler and ignition, but electronic fob. The plastic case had failed so I took it to a local branch of a key-cutting chain. The car was not nearby but at home.

The shop assistant re-homed the electronics but when I arrived home I found it would not fit, also she had not given me the old one back, and despite a careful search I had no spare! Luckily the shop was able to call out one of their locksmiths to come and make a new key.

.....

Years back I had one of those rear-engined VW 'Transporter'-based caravanettes - the sort that surfers apparently loved to corrode to death. It was horribly easy to lock the keys still inside it. I managed that twice.

By sheer luck a previous owner had replaced the small inspection-cover in the rear parcel with a hatch nearly the size of the shelf, held by four thumbscrews. Using pliers to unscrew them very carefully from below, I could then push the whole hatch plus the usual clutter it held, over onto the rear seat; then crawl in over the engine, up through the opening and follow the clutter onto the back seat.

Couldn't do it now - I'm less slim and supple!
It does happen. I remember my daughter locking herself in a parents room at the shops and security had to rescue her. Was mortifying. Sounds like he had a fun adventure though!
If it helps at all, I’ve heard this happens way more than people admit. You did exactly the right thing, and your little guy got the cutest experience out of it 🥹
Moms have a lot to think about. It's no joke managing a child and a life at the same time. Little lapses are bound to happen, but this wasn't a real safety issue so it's not like you dropped a major bomb. We all have lapses like that. To be perfect is to be other than human. Only people like me are perfect. Perfectly bald 🤔

On the bright side, if he remembers this, it will just be a cool time he got to tour a fire truck. 🤣

Nvm the mama trauma lol.

I would have been so upset in the moment too but I hope one day you can look back on this and laugh 💜
So glad he was OK, and that he got something fun out of it. We all have our stories like this, so don't feel too bad.

Okay, never leave your keys in a car, especially not along with your baby. Just take em out. Not for the locking thing, but someone can literally just steal your car and baby.

@MartinTheFirst That's one advantage of cars that have keyless go/walk away lock. The car won't lock with the key inside the car and anyway you don't need to take the key out of your handbag/purse/pocket.
