If oil is sold by the 'barrel', where does one buy a 'barrel' of crude oil from ? 8-)

The trick is simply that you can't. If you went a Big Oil company and asked to buy a 'barrel' of oil at the prices regularly quoted in the media daily, you'd get laughed out of town.
