I like the idea of electric cars, but I'd really a stable energy infrastructure in my country that doesn't go off half the day. Bear in mind, consumers aren't even that much to blame in SA. The sole energy company uses mostly coal power.

@basilfawlty89 This is maybe a dumb question, but what's the practicality of converting SA to a combination of solar and wind power?
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@LordShadowfire it's quite possible, actually. Portugal recently rolled a test that exclusively used renewable energy and it worked fine.

The problem is corruption. Eskom is partly privately owned and partially state owned and has the monopoly on energy. Add to that wealthy government ministers with shares in coal mines and you can see where the issues come.

A lot of people in SA now are just buying their own solar. We have high humidity too, so solar is ideal.

@LordShadowfire Changing the ruling class by electing people who aren't shills for the oil industry, same as almost everywhere else I fear.

@basilfawlty89 Wow. I thought the oil industry was bad in the US.

@basilfawlty89 That's dope actually. That's one of my grips about renewable energy initiatives that it isn't more focused on putting power generation in the hands of the homeowner/consumer. Instead of the hands of business to distribute and relying on the infitnalty stupid grid system.

I know there still needs to be a centralized power system to meet all needs and not every dwelling is capable of generating their own but there should be a strong focus of putting it in the personal hands of as many as possible over paying for someone else to produce it. The more we have personal power generation the better.

The reason why it is happening there sucks, but it is really fucking awesome that people are just deciding to produce their own and the more who do the better.
