Have you ever drove a car without power steering?

Was it easy or hard?

Yes, thats how old I am 😕
Juvia · 22-25, F
A little bit.
Not recommended or safe lol.
I did it anyway quite a few times since ours had a leak when I was using one of our other vehicles to learn to drive
I had to carry power steering fluid around in the back of the car when learning.
I have my own car thank god

A car with power steering will be harder if it not working. But a car made without power steering not so bad.
Yes, I like being able to feel the road.

Yes, when a car I owned had the power steering belt fail. It was a struggle, but perfectly doable.

Great upper body workout lol

Remember PS is a gimmick like a bunch of other things in cars, but everyone takes it for granted. Cars are getting heavier still now with EV's and people will expect PS as standard in them.

Not in a long time, but I have.

Of course. It took me a while to get used to power steering. You will have no trouble going from powered to manual. Just don't try turn the wheel while sitting still. It will take a bit of effort.
Yes -but it had narrower tyres so wasn't too hard. Power steering is common on cars with wider tyres as they take more effort to turn.

Yes I had a small Mazda pickup my dad got for me and it didnt have power steering. It only got annoying at slow speeds like when trying to park.
Rhode57 · 61-69, M
It was easy . It was before power steering was a thing it was a coach . Once it was moving it was easy .
Docdon23 · M
yes for years...it was typical when i did, there were few with power steering...also drove a stick shift
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I never had one with power steering. Probably depends on the size of the car.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
Yes.
It was natural.
Power steering was relatively easy. 😊
TexChik · F
Yep , we called it Armstrong steering . 💪🏻
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Yes, several. It gave your arms a good workout.
lokibole · M
Yup many times, it is difficult :)
Easy once you're moving.

No, I haven't..

Yes, many times and still do on occasion. It's a whole different experience than driving modern cars.

How about no power brakes? And a 3 on the tree?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@goodlil666 I drove a 1953 chevy with 3 on the tree. No power steering or brakes. I remember the first time I drove a car with power brakes. I almost launched my passengers through the winsahiwls.

No a car, but a farm tractor, and going straight or slightly turn was easy, but sharp turns were an absolutely a pain in the butt.
Used to drive an older van without power steering. Takes a bit of time getting used to it.
My first car. I was just happy to have a car. It’s doable
Tennessean · 31-35, F
My power steering went out yesterday
@Tennessean it will probably be hard work when going slow but once car is moving then easier. Before power steering was a thing vehicles with wide tyres would have a larger steering wheel (or use gearing) to allow the driver to exert more torque to turn the wheels, but cars designed to have power steering won't have this.

Takes some muscle. I had people envious of me and my 1966 Chevy 1/2 ton. Someone put power steering in it. Loved that nasty beast!!
