My daughter has mild autism and is turning 16 in a couple months. I'm not sure that she's going to want to learn to drive, but if she does I'll have to figure out the best way to teach her. Did your son have an instructor who specializes in working with students with special needs?

@Freetime Honestly, unless you spend a lot of time with my son, he may seem like a normal teenager. Even his teachers said that his ADHD and autism weren’t as obvious as other students they had. But he does have his shortcomings that he has to work on. We had him drive with two different instructors, and one was better than the other, but they weren’t instructors specifically for special needs kids.

Congrats to him. And good luck to you.
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
My son did the exact same thing...failed the first attempt at driving test.
Was a huge accomplishment though.
It's amazing what can be accomplished with the proper motivation: where there's a will, there's a way!!
Safe travels!!

@easterniowegin Thank you. Even if they fail, as long as they pass, it’s still a huge accomplishment. 😊

@nightjourney Thank you so much. I didn’t get mine until I was 20. Many of my friends got it between 16-18.

@nightjourney Yes. For me it was because I was living in Toronto then, and we have a fantastic public transportation system. Also, I didn’t really have a car to drive, so I didn’t feel any rush to get my license.

Turtlepower · 36-40, M
Omg he's 18 already. Time flies! Congrats to your son :)
marsbar · F
@Turtlepower Thanks B 😊 My daughter is next. She’s 15, but she can do the written at 15 1/2, so she will get her drivers license earlier than her brother.
saragoodtimes · F
as well you should be. Congrats to him

This gives me hope. My son passed the written but is still nervous in driving. He wants to do the test but i know he needs to practice more. Feels like it will never happen.
marsbar · F
@JaggedLittlePill My son was nervous too. My ex said that he was so nervous he wanted to vomit.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@marsbar Well, this is so awesome for your son and you! I bet he feels good!
marsbar · F
@JaggedLittlePill He does, but he still needs more practice. He’s never driven on the highway, so until he can be 100% confident on local roads, we are not taking him out on the highway.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Congratulations. It gives me hope.
I have yet to pass mine due to my OCD (I keep going back to see if I ran someone over), but I'm considering a motorcycle.

The love of a mother for her child,,,,,,,,,,,, is incomparable. It knows no boundaries or laws. It dares to go against everything else that is in its path
marsbar · F
@SW-User Yes 😊 Although he drives me bonkers at times. 😅

@marsbar
It was your mother who loved you before you were born - who carried you for a long months close to her heart and in the fullest of time took God's hand in hers and passed through the valley of shadows to give you life. It was she who cared for you during the helpless years of infancy and scarcely less dependent years of childhood. As you have grown less dependent, she has done the countless, thoughtful, trouble-healing, helpful and encouraging things which somehow only mothers seem to know how to do. You may have accepted these attentions more of less as matters of course and perhaps without conscious gratitude or any expressions of your appreciation. You are rapidly approaching the time in life when you will be entirely independent of your mother. The ties which dependency has bound you to her may be served as you grow older, but the tie of mother-love can never be broken
