Things you hear at the DMV.

So I'm at the DMV to renew my driver's license. Fun, right? In addition to a shocking number of people who had expired licenses, I overheard one of the employees say something like...

"Yeah, one of our cars just got totaled today, and unfortunately and we'll be short both a vehicle and an instructor for little while."

They actually instruct there? That's unheard of here. You must pay a private company here to learn to drive. Or take the classes in highschool. Testing is different than instructing and you must bring your own vehicle. Can't let someone drive a stick shift if you don't have a stick shift. Or a motorcycle, or a semi truck.

@DeWayfarer They don't really instruct you but they test you so maybe that's what they're calling an instructor.

@REMsleep still. Their own vehicles? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@DeWayfarer yeah actually now that I think about it you do have to bring your own vehicle to be tested so I'm not really too sure what he overheard.

@DeWayfarer From what I've seen, the ones I've been to in my area probably have some contracts with local private companies, as it's always been the same ones. The companies will probably assign one of their drivers to DMV duty for the day. The worker probably referred to the vehicle and and driver as "our" because they work together.

@SubstantialKick not here. That's a legal ethical problem doing that. The public would scream favoritism about that.

If any of that were to be done the legal process in doing so is prohibitive. Everything goes up for bids and business licensing is checked. So forth.
