I don't get why people are so obsessed with what electric cars can do on the strip. How about something more real life, like how they add hours and hours to any long road trip. You need some pretty impressive acceleration to make up for that lost time.

@SooperSarah that will come as technology advances. If infrastructure for EVs was as matured as it is for gas cars with gas stations everywhere, people would have less to cry about lol
@deadgerbil while finding a charger can be an issue, flooding the market with chargers won't charge a car any faster. Sure, some offer some sort of fast charging but also say using it too often will shorten the life of the battery. But! It has a crazy 0-60 time!

@SooperSarah this is like people riding horses criticizing early cars for x y z issues but look at where we're at now lol
@deadgerbil I get it. But were they writing laws banning horses?
This technology is no where near ready to be forced down people's throats. It'll get there eventually, but right now they're too expensive, not very practical for everyone, and lacking reliability.

@SooperSarah Right now, "fast charging" is limited to 350kW at public chargers. Battery packs are being developed that can charge from 10% to 80% in ten minutes at higher wattages; Polestar has demonstrated this.

@SooperSarah there is a misguided effort to accelerate the reliance on green energy without ensuring reliability, like how people want wind energy over nuclear (which is pretty green in its own right)
With regards to fast charging and battery longevity, batteries can be replaced. Expensive event, but people who buy normal cars assume the same risk with their engines and trans blowing out. With long road trips, people should be resting during that which allows for charging to be relatively painless

@SooperSarah over a journey of 500 miles north to south in the UK, Mat spent about an hour charging. He says it would maybe be 45 minutes in a petrol car with fueling and normal stops to rest etc. 15 minutes over such a large time isn't really remarkable and this is with technology from 3 years ago
