Ugh why are so few cars manual now

Well, there are two answers.

The first is that you’re simply not going to get representation when, for the most part, an algorithm determines basic production levels. And, tbh, they’re pretty good. Remember too, the fewer you build, the higher the average cost because your fixed costs are divided amongst fewer units.

Next, as has been mentioned, new transmissions are much more efficient than they used to be. A manual transmission used to be 3-4 mpg better and a manual transmission car/truck was typically about $1,500 less too. That market savings attracts both the enthusiast and the cheaper customer - with the cheaper customer being the much larger market segment. Now both automatic and continuously variable transmissions are more efficient than manual transmissions. That shifts buyers even further away from manual transmissions, including the frugal customer.

Thus, the enthusiast is the lone soldier still looking for a manual transmission. The algorithm picks up on that. As a result, fewer cars/trucks are made with manual transmissions. Markets are efficient.
