I’ve owned four Mercedes over the years. Loved the great road manners and rock solid feel. Last two were 4Matic and excellent in the snow. Problem is, after 110K miles they $100 bill you to death. But if you have the tools and knowledge, that 500SL could be a fun project.

Lets see. For $5000 you can almost buy the parts to re do the brakes..Or maybe buy a radiator...😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Yeah, there are more sportier cars but once you get used to driving these things, other "good cars" are "good" but the Benz is clearly better designed with excellent chassis dynamics. Everyone has their preferences. I could crank Pink Floyd in the E550 and nothing rattled LOL.The thing was milled from a steel billet it seemed. But yeah, very expensive to repair. It's that so many things failed on it after that radiator that should not have failed.

@rfatoday My son has a love affair with BMWs. He can afford it. But hardly ever drives. Still. He has no othe vices. So I have to allow that..😷

Good for you. I like to build to my own cars and trucks and fix tractors. Glad to see the younger generation wanting to take over.

Good for the body. Junk the rest and build your own car using other cheaper parts.
Notice below someone said they put a NOS engine in their Mercedes. They rebuilt the whole thing doing that.

Mercs and BMW's are about the worst cars to work on; nothing is where it should be, and aftermarket parts cost as much as OEM parts for everything else...

Wowza! Such a great 🚙 related thread filled with so many thoughtful comments by my fellow SWeeps. So much so that I bookmarked it.

What year is it. I know someone who has an older one. It hasn't been much trouble but gets terrible gas mileage for some reason.
