" An intelligent woman is a woman with whom one can be as stupid as one wants. "

- P.V.

So, my car wouldn't start.

So I had to change my battery.

Shopped around, and one lady tried to sell me one for $250!

I think people think women are stupid when it comes to cars. Smh.

Around 100.
This is why it's good to have some car knowledge.
Also helps to have a trusted personal mechanic.

I had a car problem once.
Forgot what the issue was but I took it to a shop that my dad recommended.

They wanted to charge me 800 to fix it.
I took it to my mechanic, whom I should have gone to in the first place, who told me what the problem actually was, and charged less than 100 to fix it.

I told my dad, the people at the shop (where he's gone to fir years) are probably getting over on him.
His car is always in the shop
Umile · 41-45, F
@rosyhills smh. I should be a mechanic.
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@Umile I tell myself the same thing. Seems like you'd make good money, even being an honest one lol.
As fast as people drive and fly over speed bumps...I know they have pieces rattling lose ready to come off their car at any given moment 😄
LilPrincess · 46-50, F
About 4 months ago I had to get a new one it was about $200 after tax.
LilPrincess · 46-50, F
@Umile that was from Walmart in Indiana. Unfortunately after doing my homework for my car that was rather cheap.
Umile · 41-45, F
@LilPrincess Girl, you call that cheap ? Maybe I'm just cheap cause I can't.
LilPrincess · 46-50, F
@Umile some wanted 300 plus for it.
iwishuwerehere · 61-69, M
I just got a new battery from Walmart. The battery was around $100. I installed it myself so there was no additional charge. My wife’s sister got one at Walmart & had them install it. She paid around $225.
Umile · 41-45, F
@iwishuwerehere mmmhmm. That's that female discount. Nmh.
It really depends on the size required. Once the correct size is determined, then the price is pretty much based on warranty. The better the replacement warranty.... the higher the price.

I just replaced a battery in one of my Ford vehicles at the dealer with a Motorcraft Battery. They charged 189.00 installed (a difficult installation due to battery location within the vehicle). I thought that was a fair price as other places had quoted 225-250 installed.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Threepio Thats not bad. They even did it for you. 👌
@Umile IKR.... That was one job I did not want to tackle myself as it involved removing a bunch of assemblies (the battery is actually up near the firewall, underneath the air cleaner assembly).
Umile · 41-45, F
@Threepio That sounds pretty difficult to get to. I guess that would up the price fir the installation.
TexChik · F
It depends on where you get it and if you install it yourself. A dealership will charge you just over $300 to install a new battery for you. You can buy one and install it yourself for about half that....Unless its a Lithium battery for and electric car. Those start at $16,000 and got up dramatically for vehicles with higher energy demands.
TexChik · F
@Umile The cheap batteries will last maybe 3 years ...They are outrageously overpriced. FJB
Umile · 41-45, F
@TexChik mmmhmm
TexChik · F
@Umile 😉
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
Found a car battery out in the woods...scrap yard paid me 10 bucks for it!
Umile · 41-45, F
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
Depends if needs to provide start stop then absolutely $250 I mean in Halfords their priciest batteries are £270 including fitting

An ordinary battery about £70 for a 12v
Umile · 41-45, F
@QuietEd2019 mmmhmm
QuietEd2019 · 31-35, M
@Umile main thing is get from a shop like Halfords in U.K. the batteries come with a guarantee for a few years 3-5 usually
Umile · 41-45, F
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Which is why my golf carts are gasoline powered
Umile · 41-45, F
@MarineBob smart
goodlil666 · 51-55, M
It is not really to far out of line to spend $250 on a good quality replacement battery . A lil more expensive one will often last longer because they usually have more cold cranking amps , making it last longer in extreme temps both hot and cold especially .
Umile · 41-45, F
@goodlil666 makes sense. But for a generic battery, that's just ridiculous.
goodlil666 · 51-55, M
@Umile Yes, for a generic low end battery that is ridiculous .
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I think it was 100 dollars
ArtieKat · M
The AA (Automobile Association), whom I paid huge membership fees to, tried to charge me about £130 for a new battery - I went to an autospares shop and got one for less than £60. I cancelled my subscription straight afterwards
Umile · 41-45, F
@ArtieKat That's nuts. You're so smart.
Nick1 · 61-69, M
It depends on size, capacity and what it is made of. There are few different technologies for car batteries. Plus price depends on how long is warranty too.
For decent small to mid size cars, good performance battery may cost $100-150.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Nick1 A good price range.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
Depends on the warranty wanted with the battery and the CCA. The battery that fits my car starts at about $70 and goes up exponentially from there depending on the other options.
Umile · 41-45, F
Depends on the car and the battery. I think my generic one was between $80+$130. I could buy an Optima battery for over $400.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Justafantasy Dang, that is expensive. $400!!! That's almost half a grand. Smh.
@Umile those ones you can shoot and still use, have upside down and they'll still work. Usually only see them in custom vehicles where safety and reliability are first priority
Umile · 41-45, F
@Justafantasy Dang. Talk about durable. Ok. I guess I can budget for that. I'm talking but I can spend how much on food.
JudyS · 51-55, F
It depends on they type of battery. If your vehicle is one of those with the stop-start technology (i.e., vehicle turns off at red lights, etc. to save gas), the battery will be more expensive.
Umile · 41-45, F
@JudyS What kind of cars use those kind of batteries?
antonioioio · 70-79, M
It might be a charging problem
Not a battery
You need to know what the problem is first
Umile · 41-45, F
@antonioioio interesting. Tell me more.
antonioioio · 70-79, M
@Umile every car has an alternator that produces a electricity to recharge the battery after staring
They also have voltage rehlators
Any of these not working right will result in the battery not recharging
Ive seen some cost about 400, and if you need a hybrid battery forget about it.
Umile · 41-45, F
@MyMonstersAreReal Must be some very nice batteries.
Hatt94 · 56-60, MVIP
I spent $160 for a motorcycle battery last week.
Umile · 41-45, F
@Hatt94 That's a lot.
Hatt94 · 56-60, MVIP
@Umile better than pushing it...
There were cheaper ones$120. But i wanted the AGM one this time.
jackson55 · M
Make sure the alternator is working before replacing the battery.
Umile · 41-45, F
@jackson55 Thank you. 🙏
antonioioio · 70-79, M
Did you get your car sorted?
Umile · 41-45, F
@antonioioio Yes. Thanks for the concern. 🙏
fun4us2b · M
Price of everything is up...

https://www.autozone.com/batteries-starting-and-charging/battery
Umile · 41-45, F
@fun4us2b True. That would be the smart thing to do.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
It varies, vehicle to vehicle, and not all batteries are created equal, don't go cheap. Interstate used to be the best, not anymore. Delphi were great, but they were bought out.
Umile · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 It's expensive on an island. Cheap is the only way to go. My battery usually lasts about two years.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Umile That's about half the time it should last. Make sure your alternator is charging. Using a bad battery could wear it out prematurely, as it has to work harder.
Umile · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 Thanks 👌
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
250 is within the range but you should buy it from a store with a warranty, not on the black market
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
@Umile also there are different tiers like gold super platinum etc 🤮
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
@Umile home Depot might have a cheap one
Umile · 41-45, F
@pancakeslam For reals. My smart self didn't check that place.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
Over 100 bucks for most solid durable batteries. Pick a good one and have fun. ☺️
Umile · 41-45, F
@Zonuss 👌
Bang5luts · M
Toooooooo..... much!
Umile · 41-45, F
@Bang5luts I agree.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
You can buy one for just under $150, but if you want a good one and need it installed it will run you about $200.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Umile She was fine with the truck. We both cried over the car. 😢
Umile · 41-45, F
@Musicman Nmh. I would too. Ya'll must have some deep pockets. 👍
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Umile Not anymore! 😂😂😂😂
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
Around $200 makes sense especially these days
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
@Umile yeah due to inflation price gouging blah blah blah
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
@Umile I’m so lucky I drive a Toyota Corolla and have only had to change the battery once I don’t remember it being expensive but I can’t imagine what it is now
Umile · 41-45, F
@Moneyonmymind nmh. 🤜
Sadly, they're getting more and more expensive as manufacturers and retail suppliers have gotten more greedy.
Umile · 41-45, F
@NativePortlander1970 I think so. It was 250 @ one. 165 @ another. Though it's been known to be $110 @ the same place by guys. And would be between $110 - $165 @ another. Too much greed and jumps in prices these days.
