Ever had a rat in your engine??

So my friend has a rat that keeps returning to eat her wires in her car's engine. BMW tells her it's common with their vehicles??!!! Like you know it happens often but you don't do something different, WTF???!!
Literally fix it today and tonight he returns - 4th time now!!! Nothing scares him off, not rat poison, chilly sauce, pepper corns, moth balls, you name it, we have tried it!!!

I keep waiting to see this little asshole come at me when I leave her house. I have visions of him doing this

BMW in particular uses an "environmentally friendly" biodegradable wire insulation now. Rodents LOVE it. It's soy based. Honda sells a capasin wrap for wires that can prevent the behavior. You can also try spraying peppermint oil in the engine bay.
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
@ShadowWolf will try that when it comes back from BMW
Spumoni · 46-50, M
Yep. The plant based wire insulation to make it more environmentally friendly has a major flaw. Coworker had the same problem on her Toyota 4Runner
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
@Spumoni Same. Same vehicle. Wiring harness replaced twice. Finally Toyota wrapped wiring harness with mouse detterent
Squirrels in my case whom I consider to be rats with furry tails... I live in the country and so far they've eaten through two Hemi engine harnesses and firewall insulation and a Ford ignition harness and hood insulation. I have an inspection lamp that I leave on under the hood, plus a couple of chlorine hockey pucks wedged into the engine bays. So far it seems to work, providing I remember to remove the lamp prior to driving off.. 👍

@Majorlatency Use a strobe light and hook it to your battery instead. Zip tie it to under the hood somewhere. That way you can just leave it there.
@ShadowWolf It'll be like a mobile disco..

Great way to also pick up chicks! Thanks!

I worked at a used car lot where they had a shop to rebuild and repair cars. Had cars stored out back behind the building and it is in a semi-rural area. A few times the mechanic would lift the hood and find a pack rat’s nest where the car battery had been. Also was following my ex to his job site and his truck starts swerving on the road and then I see a mouse jumping up out of the window. He was freaking out when the mouse was climbing up on him.
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
@cherokeepatti funny, but dangerous!
Whyme · 46-50, M
Ive got a theory that rodents leave a scent for each other to follow i think thats how they keep finding the same spor ild suggest washing it very thorough and ive heard bbq briquets smell like fire to them and they wont enter a fire maybe try a couple in places that wont actually start a fire
ShadowWolf · 31-35, M
@Whyme You made a theory using the scientific method by forming a hypothesis on observation. That's how facts are made :)
Whyme · 46-50, M
@ShadowWolf my ex had a ford explorer that i had painted barbie pink cause she wanted the barbie mobile and my racecar was sponsored by uh oh better get maaco so i got a good deal well it was also frequented by mice so i waged war on them lol
ShadowWolf · 31-35, M
@Whyme Ya, mice suck. I use multiple repellent methods out here in the country. They hate light/strobe, peppermint, and high pitched noises. I utilize all three :)

A lot of rats drive Beemers!😂👍
It was a problem before the cats started hanging out here. 😽😽My two pet cats are from the local colony, so they are experienced and well trained in the art of rodent eradication.😵😵😵😵😵😵
Started my jeep once and heard a rat get shredded in the serpentine belt.😵 It was nasty.🤢
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
OMG, that sucks.

It reminds of that scene from the Empire Strikes Back, when Han, Chewy, Leia, Threepio, and R2 take refuge in a "cave" inside an asteroid (but that's no cave!)

While there, they encounter mynocks, chewing on the power cables of the Falcon .
Thats odd
Viper · M
I knew something that had that problem with a Squirrel.

I think they were either trying to make a nest or see if it was food.
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
@Viper it's very frustrating and costly! We've even considered that it may be another critter as only one small rat dropping was found...we don't have squirrels, so not sure what the alternative may be.
Viper · M
@Fantabulous You know what's good at getting rid of rats 🐀? 🐍😏
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
@Viper Yeah and there are some snakes around (no vipers though 😜), so I wish they would get to work. I bet this little rat even bit off the snakes head, cheeky bastard
Ozuye502 · 36-40, M
Rats no squirrels yes put a layer of chicken wire held in place with zip ties chlorine pucks also would work or spray with chili powder pepper oils mint oil and something sticky.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
Oh no. This happened to our car. But it somehow moved out. I dont know whether it was coz we went on a 300 mile drive and it was like noooo or it flung itself out during the journey lol
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
I do know some GM uses wires that has soy bean oils used in production.
What an attraction
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@Virgo79 about all the manufacturers do it now; ever since the government started pushing all these "greenie" nonsense...

Their "solution" to one problem is creating a dozen more; was the same way with diesels, they push for more power and put out more soot as a result, so they start adding DFP filters; DPF was causing higher nox emissions, so they add DEF fluid...
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@wildbill83 thats a scam all of its own with diesels
I know a guy with a suv that's had the wiring harness replaced twice, and its new.
Thats where I found out about the soy.
Its happening alot
Also horses use to like the taste of new paint, lesson being don't park where the horses are
My car in college ran on hamster power. Just threw peanuts under the hood.
WindTherapy · 56-60, M
That would suck and could get expensive fast repairing on a regular basis. 😞
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
nope, none of my vehicles have wire insulation made out of rat candy... 🤔
MrAboo · 36-40, M
Buy a pellet gun and eat that bastard.
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
@MrAboo If we could find him,.we most certainly would!
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Feed a stray cat once. Problem solved.
