My chain keeps slipping off

Is it something I can fix myself or should I just take it to a cycling shop? Do I need to take a link out?

I'm assuming that you're talking about a bicycle. There could be a few reasons why this happens. I think you should take it to a shop to get it corrected. You don't want it falling off at an inopportune moment.
