Space Saver tyres have been around for a long time now

They first came onto the market in the mid 70s.
Australian car manufacturer, Holden, first introduced the space saver tyre in 2005. As stated by them, Removing the 20-30kg full-size spare from the equation allowed the Commodore to be tested at a lighter nominated weight in official Australian Design Rule (ADR) fuel economy testing.
I will be travelling over 4500km across Australia in several months' time. No way will a space saver tyre provide any peace of mind. Rated at 80km an hour, on a national highway, not something I will be entertaining.
Requested a quote from Mitsubishi for new rim and tyre.
This is something that also gets on my nelly. The company knows the price of what they have, why the need for a quote. Just tell me the price of the item, fitted.
I will most likely buy a secondhand rim from a car wreakers place and add a new full-size tyre.
I predict the cost of a new fitted rim and tyre will be at least $750

They are called donuts here. And for a good reason. Worthless like junk food.

That 750 sounds very expensive for a rim and tire, even after the conversion. $531 USA. I have had to get both before. Someone stole my spare tire.

Oh and stay away from aluminum rims if you can. The lug nut torque is not the same as steel rims. Pretty certain you'll stay away from mag rims, being they are outrageously priced.

@DeWayfarer I had a proper look, and the price is around $500 - $550 new.

@Gusman I am guessing a couple of hundred second hand would be about right. Depending on the tyre type and condition. Some may not be happy to split a whole set..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Junk yards don't care.

@DeWayfarer Depending on the damage to the car and if the wheel is a specific patterned alloy rim or just a steel pressed wheel. A wrecker may have all four wheels and tyres and want to sell as one lot.. But often the damage leaves an incomplete set.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman They go as far as you having to take it off yourself here. I have done it many times.

@DeWayfarer Yep. It can be that way here some places. While other more upmarket places disassemble, clean, label and pack. At a premium of course. Particularly anything electrical or perishable..😷
