Protection plans for name-brand lawn mowers like Toro, or even for home appliances are NOT worth it under any circumstance. There was a very informative consumer's documentary on TV about this very thing which I watched and the bottom line was, the purchase of a protection plan beyond the manufacturer's warranty period is useless in all cases.
Why is it useless? Because in the first 3 years of a Toro's life cycle, you are working with brand new equipment. If there are ANY manufacturer's defects in the product itself, those defects will show up within the first year of you operating that equipment.
If you make it beyond the first year, you can pretty much conclude that you have purchased a good machine if nothing has happened to it out of the ordinary.
BUT, if you buy the extended warranty for another 3 years beyond the manufacturer's warranty, you are PRE-Paying for a maintenance issue that hasn't happened yet, NOR is likely to happen at all for that matter!
Yet, after the first 3 years, followed by the next 3 years of use and no problem has ever existed, your extended warranty expires and you still haven't had any unexpected repairs done to the machine! BUT, you paid for repairs in the form of an extended warranty which you never used, nor can you use going into year 7 if something suddenly broke!
The only time an extended warranty on ANYTHING is worthwhile buying up front, is if the extended warranty is for an indefinite period of time beyond the manufacturer's warranty AND it's transferable to a new owner in the future.
Any extended warranty that expires 3 years after the expiry of the manufacturer's warranty is nothing more than a cash-grab. Don't buy it! Use the money instead for any unforeseen repairs that may be needed AFTER the manufacturer's warranty has expired after the first 3 years.

@swirlie thank you. That's what everyone has been telling me. I appreciate your knowledge.

You're welcome! As a matter of interest, how much does the extended warranty cost for 3 extra years of warranty coverage?

Yeah, $325 is way too much money. Here is a rule of thumb... if the manufacturer's warranty on anything is only 1 year, don't buy the equipment. This is because the manufacturer doesn't have confidence in their product to last beyond 1 year and they're expressing that fact to you in the 1 year warranty period they offer.
But if the manufacturer's warranty period is at least 3 years, which is a long time, you are safe in buying that product. Even high-end cars only have a 4 year warranty period and rarely does anything happen within those first 4 years.
But other cars like Chev or GM for example, only have a 2 year warranty on brand new cars and SUV's which cost almost as much to buy as higher-end cars!
Why does a Chev only have a 2 year warranty? Because General Motors does not have confidence in their product to warranty it for more than 2 years.
Happy grass cutting!
