EV charger pre-authorisation charges - what a rort!

So it seems many/most/all public chargers now seem to require you to accept having a pre-authorisation charge taken from your card-linked account before the charger system will let you charge your electric vehicle. What a rort!

That means that if you don't have enough money in your card-linked account you might be refused a charge by 'the system' if the pre-auth payment is declined because of insufficient funds.

Of course you cannot pay to use an EV public charger with cash - it all *must* be done using a card-linked account. Is this really the future of personal transportation people want to have?

I've never heard of a normal fuel station making a person 'pre-authorise' their card account prior to filling up their petrol or diesel powered vehicle with fuel. I nearly always pay in person with cash to buy fuel. Real money. No hidden charges involved.

As much as EVs are a step forward in renewable energy and pollution control, they have specific uses, such as city and suburban travel and fkleets like taxis and sommercial delivery runners. The major advantage being the ability to charge at home or through a fleet terminal. Charge time and the cost of a commerical operation will always be an issue. However, BMW have just announced they will not be continuing development of electrics, having cracked the major issues with Hydrogen.馃樂

@zonavar68 We agree. Urban usage and the ability to charge at home are the real long term edges for EV..馃樂

@whowasthatmaskedman Just don't charge an EV or any other battery powered device indoors (or in an enclosed shed/garage) unattended especially at night when people are sleeping due to the thermal runaway fire risk. EV charging should only be done outdoors for safety. Home EV chargers don't require credit/debit card pre-authorisations though. 8-)

@zonavar68 Yes. But most charging fires come back to non standard chargers. However, your point is taken..馃樂

Another scam from those who perpetuate the climate hoax.
