The Ego....as Dunkin sees it:

This morning I stood in line at Dunkin’ Donuts next to a man ordering a caramel swirl latte with .."extra whip".

I was ordering a jelly donut....and water..

We didn’t speak.

But spiritually? We were in combat.

I could feel it.

He glanced at my cup. I glanced at his.

Two grown adults pretending not to notice while absolutely noticing everything.

In my head, I was superior.
Water. Disciplined. Minimal. Pure.

In his head... I’m guessing.... I was probably sad. Or boring. Or one flat tire away from taking hostages.

Two egos in a pastry-scented arena, silently building entire psychological profiles over liquid plain..and bean flavored.

And the wild part?

Neither of us was thinking about coffee.

We were thinking about identity.

My cup said: I have control.
His cup said: I enjoy life.

Neither statement was true. Or false. Just projected.

Standing there, I realized how often I do this.. assign meaning where there is none.

Create hierarchy out of harmless preferences.

Turn donuts into doctrine.

The ego is fragile like that.

It needs comparison.

Without someone next to me, what is my water even proving?

He took a sip of his whipped masterpiece. I took a sip of my...nothing.

We both looked mildly satisfied....

And for a brief second, I wondered how peaceful life would be if I could just let a latte be a latte.. and a man be a man....without turning either into a mirror.

Hmmmm I wonder now many lives were changed by similar encounters (in your case almost), could you imagine you bumped into him and spilled some of his Late. What an ice breaker. I’ve seen that movie. Now I’m thinking back to my life and similar encounters that might have led to conversation or more. I feel like I’ve had a few. Thinking. I’ll get back to you!

@4thdimensiondream An interesting perspective. 🤔

@Punxi I thought a little bit more about this today while working. I could only think of situations where I started a conversation from a chance encounter but I didn’t take it any further and regretted it after. One was on a NYC subway. A young girl (I was young then too lol) was sitting holding a record album from a pretty obscure artist that I loved. So started chatting with her and it was nice. But it felt too awkward to ask for her number on the subway. What this has to do with your morning encounter and thoughts I have no idea!

@4thdimensiondream

Happenstance began a conversation with an older man at an antiques convention once in San Francisco.

I'd gone there to purchase an advertised bracelet made from the copper discovered beneath the site of the first Farris wheel at the Worlds Fair in Chicago in the 1800s.

Farris fan...

Anyway, his name was Mudgett.

As a fan of biographies, a few questions latter he was in fact a decent of Herman Webster Mudgett...

Prolific serial muderer whom preyed upon woman...during The Worlds Fair where my Farris wheel was debuted.

The universe already knows who we will cross paths with.

Just a matter of reception.

@Punxi wild story! Speaking of Farris Wheels, I have ridden the famous one in Coney Island many times. It has these scary moving cars.
