One of Efteling's most magical features is its greenery
The park started very small in 1952 as 10 fairy tale depictions in the middle of nature. Yes, when @TheRealBarbossa and I will be visiting next year, they'll celebrate their 75th anniversary! 🥳
Although it grew to 30 fairy tales and 32 other attractions since then, nature is still a big part of the park: 89% to be exact. 🌳 The management promised permit authorities to never develop more than 11% of the park area and leave the rest untouched.
And yes, that's just the park area. They own almost 4 times as much land outside the park borders, but the forest there doesn't count towards the nature percentage inside.
Now that they've reached that limit, the only way to fit in more attractions is by moving the park walls. They're working on that now, but they're expanding by 10 times as much as the next attraction occupies, so they can include 9 times that much untouched nature too within the new borders.
