our focal seizures...Everyone in my family line going back 3 generations and forward 2 generations, has very very mild focal seizures.. I didn't even know this was a thing until we adopted our 4 grandkids and they were delayed. They did MRI's on them, and we were told they all had seizure activity on one side of their brains. When they explained the symptoms of this to me, I said that everyone I know in my family does this. We just call it taking a vacation. I had no idea that not everyone stops talking and kind of spaces out for a few, and then rejoins the conversation later
This is our normal. In fact, the kids have all learned from me to hold up a hand and say "I am on vacation. I'll send you a postcard." This helps everyone around us know this is no big deal. I am ok. It does kinda feel like a vacation. I mean you can't participate in the ongoing conversations, but you are aware of what is going on around you, and when it is over, you feel more relaxed because part of your brain rested. I don't know if this is a proper explanation, but this is what it feels like for me and my family. As I said, though, we are lucky to have very mild focal seizures, except for my oldest son.
For most of us, this has not been a huge problem because although one side is having a seizure, the other side works fine. However, my son has a birth defect because I have MTHFR and I didn't know it when I was young. I didn't have enough folic acid and b vitamins in my body during pregnancy because of the MTHFR. Anyway, he has an area that connects both sides of his brain that is not supposed to be there. This has caused him to have seizures on both sides sometimes. For most of us, though, it is just a speed bump in the day.
Our seizures aren't like this because we are aware of what is going on around us, but this just cracks me up. :-)
