hypothetical situation:
there is a train about to crush into 3 innocent people... they will die.
you have the opportunity to pull a switch and the train will go another direction and kill only one innocent person... that otherwise would be perfectly safe.
would you pull that switch ?

@SummerDream: That is a fantastic question. Just the kind I like to torture myself with. I would say it would depend on who the people were. If they were complete strangers...then yes, I would pull the switch

@RayKyler: questions like these are actually very relevant lately... as we are getting to self driving cars... someone has to program them with ethics like this, avoid 3 people and kill only one ?
what if its 3 old people and one child ? can make endless scenarios like these...

Oh goodness, again, I'd pick the one. Now if I knew the people, that would add an extra dynamic, but it might make it easier

you can spice this scenario up...
what if it was 3 convicts on the way to prison ?
how about a colleague from work (not a good friend) vs 3 strangers ?

If it was three convicts versus a friend of mine... I'd save the convicts.
And I'd save the strangers in the next scenario.
This is all hypothetical. Realistically, I'd probably run away

@RayKyler: thats a very honest answer... humans tend to prefer the "non-action" if they pull the lever they feel guilty for killing the one person, but they can easily handle the death of the 3 people as it wasnt their fault

It reminds me of the movie Eye in the Sky. Risk taking the life of one child, or let suicide bombers kill who knows how many

@RayKyler: so would you generally say that killing one person to safe many others is a good thing ?
lets like lets say one convicted murder.... vs 10 innocent people with a family and kids ?

Generally, yes. That is typically my sole justification for taking life is to save life.
