Agree with most of the comments. Just to add, you can have multiple journals on any number of subjects or experiences. A diary is a personal account of your life. Even if it stretches into multiple volumes, it is still considered a single work.

I journal, almost every day. I journal all my thoughts just like I would a diary. I've been journaling all my life and it started for me when I got my very first diary, when I was a little girl.
Most people don't call it a diary anymore, but for me it's a place where I keep my thoughts.
I have boxes of them as I've been writing my whole life. I keep them in my closet and I hope to one day put it in a book, of memoirs called My Life In A Box.
It's my journey, which has become my journal of thoughts and experiences that dates back to a point in time in my life.
For me, a journal is the same as a diary, because it's my personal thoughts of all my lifes experiences.

@MamaButterfly thank you so much. I want to start a journal very soon

A diary is more like a calendar and usually refers to a record of something that refers to the date. That’s why secretaries keep diaries for their bosses.
However a journal is more like a book which contain your thoughts and feelings and often has the dates and times that those entries were made.

Not really a difference. The name diary would suggest something done daily, while the journal occasionally. And, I've noticed online that guys prefer to call theirs journals. I got the impression online that males find the word 'diary' "unmanly". But, otherwise, it's just a preference.

I'd call a diary something more "personal", filled with emotions; a journal makes me think of something colder, more objective.

A journal is kept like a history of your life. A diary is more personal. Secretive almost. Not something you want to share with everyone.
