I think they're being traditional in many cases. I make that request and I take my shoes of entering anyone's home. I don't have to be asked.

Well I would be respectful of their wishes.It is a shoes allowed house in my house however.

I prefer to be barefoot anyway so it makes me happy. I hate it when they tell me to keep them on

Their home, their rules I suppose. I have a longtime friend who was born in Japan and has tatami mats on her floors. When I know I'll be visiting her I wear shoes I can kick off and place on a shelf by the door. And I wear socks.
