Do you agree with not keeping score in kids sports?

I think its redic not to teach children how to cope with losing and being a good sport when winning.

Losing is an excellent lesson.

NO, I disagree with that policy. Kids need to know that in life, we fail, and need to learn to work harder to get better. There's no motivation in getting better if we don't know we've failed. I feel sorry for the world in a few years, for we're already seeing the results of this nonsense in society today, and it's only going to get worse..
I totally agree.
I think it avoids the issue of winning or losing entirely, so I'm not sure they learn anything about either of those things. That being said, there's still a lot of other valuable things that can be learned in team sports.

I still think it's important to teach kids that their level if self worth is not tied to whether or not they win, and taught how to be good sports whether they win or lose, succeed or fail.

Achieving something and winning are nice, but winning isn't everything. 🙂
@AmbivalentFriability: How so? maybe I can explain
I think not "keeping score" in academics might be more important. Getting good grades so you can get into a good college later is one thing, but I don't see how competitiveness is beneficial otherwise in this scenario. School is stressful enough without feeling like you need to be a better student than everyone else.
@AmbivalentFriability: Oh I see, yes, I was simply speaking of youth sports but I see your point within academics.

I agree….I also think that learning what you need to do to be competitive (or finding out that you just aren't that good at a particular sport) isn't a bad thing.

What I meant was that I agree with you (not with not keeping score).

"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." In other words- we don't want to breed easy acceptance of defeat.

and raise a bunch of uncompetitive wimps?
Couldn't agree more!
Kids need to learn to deal with disappointment.

Oh I dunno, we're a long time an adult with all the crap that comes with being an adult, kids seem to be forced into growing up so soon now, let them be kids for a while and live in ignorance, also you didn't say how old ?
@ajoite: I'm speaking from say 9years old and up. As I've said earlier, the first year or two is teaching fundamentals so I have no problem with not keeping official score, even tho everybody watching and including a lot of those toddlers KNOW the score anyways.
ajoite · 51-55, F
@willyswonka: It's always a balance, 9yr olds sure, I think kids should be prepared for the outside world and have no time for some parents that are raising intensively farmed kids that don't climb trees, and barely go outside at all.
@ajoite: I couldn't agree more, especially about simply getting kids outside to go play.

No more participation awards!

Yes, for very small children.
@ lizabee: Currently, that's how it is for first year toddlers which I agree with since at that age you really are just teaching fundamentals.

@willyswonka: I lovingly call them the daisy pickers
@Lizabee: HAHA, yes, or dirt drawers! lol

No. There are winners and losers. Every child does not deserve a trophy. It's called life
Socialclutz · 36-40, M
Yes it's ridiculous
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
