In any social media, do you consider people to be your friends or just mutuals?

I kind of feel awkward when people say I am their mutual, like what exactly does that even mean?

I guess it's just weird to me because I consider people my friends and I feel like they feel that our friendship is somehow not valid. Also I see others call others their mutual when I think of them as friends and I think they were above being mutuals.
