My Family name for example is Warner
The name Warner is an American baby name. In American the meaning of the name Warner is: Defender. German Meaning: The name Warner is a German baby name. In German the meaning of the name Warner is: Protector of the people; defending warrior.
Over time it was changed to Waner which began with the family surname of WAN which has it's origins in China back 3000 years ago from Madam Wan who was the Royal consort to the emperor of china ( Now my father had no idea of the meaning of the names he gave me )

Stephen = He who is crowned of Knowledge

Douglas = By the dark flowing rivers of blood

Waner or Wan = Of Ancient Warriors

@Paschar: I've only known Douglas as from "Dubh glas" meaning black stream. Nothing about rivers of blood 😧

Here is a similarly weird name. Ariel apparently used to be a male name until Walt Disney gave the name to a mermaid and changed everything.

@nedkelly: Yes. But the name Shea is Irish. Plus neary had Irish in his family. Same as ward. Wards from lowell in USA but still goes by the name of Irish Mickey Ward
