What is it about high school romances that can make them seem more intense or memorable than relationships later in life?

Why do some people date someone for 5–10 years without committing, only to meet someone new and commit to them within a much shorter time? What changes?
What are the reasons why people don't want to believe there is a God and Creator of life, of the planets and galaxies, of the universe?
