Why do some spiritual traditions emphasize meditation so strongly, despite others claiming it doesn’t lead to enlightenment?

Physiologically, why did I burst into tears when my mother unconditionally offered me to live with her after having lived on the streets of Toronto, Ontario with no money at all, no ID, no income, no high school diploma, and no belongings?
