Why does the anxiety of being in a new country feel so much lighter when you are not constantly managing your phone?

Last night I watched the midterm convention. Can a MAGA explain why Trump made people swear allegiance to him? Or why he asked people to cheat at the ballot box? Is that cult-like?
How do you convince a new neighbor that you are a good person to have next door despite your loud or unconventional habits?
