How can facing bullies as a child change your perspective on conflict and intimidation as an adult?

Why do old people who are seriously ill (like cancer, ect.) and suffer hardship not give up their life? I mean they aren't happy and healthy at all, also they have already lived long lives, and their illness cause trouble to their family.
Is there a way to keep yourself from ever liking someone or staying true to your plans of staying alone because you are not sure your future self would follow that plan?
