If scientific theories are always considered tentative, why do some people seem so certain about them while others remain skeptical?

Why do people who say 'I was never good at math' often turn out fine at budgeting or sports stats?
Why is it possible for a lower society to infiltrate a higher society? Is this because of the way women treat younger men or the way older men treat younger women?
