What are some effective strategies to overcome the "clouds" that block your path to choosing joy?

Why do some individuals, like the described grandfather, manage to excel academically despite having so little, while others struggle to do the same?
I’m a diehard Republican and people don’t accept my views because of the historically Democratic state I live in. What should I do about it?
