Does the high level of privacy in your social circle make the bond between members feel more like a family than a friendship?

How do compliments about talents you've worked hard to develop compare to those about innate qualities, like your appearance?
My younger brother posts things on a private account and keeps them from our family. It hurts, and I feel like I've failed as a sister. Has anyone been through this?
