Is it possible to live a normal life without thoughts of enlightenment once you've experienced an awakening?

Given that for the last 10 years or so, the age of USA presidents starting their term has been at least 70, does it say something about the ongoing lack of high-quality candidates of a younger generation for any party, and are real reforms required?
