Why is being loved more important for a marriage than being fully understood?

If you were a performer, would you prefer to be a controversial figure and have strong public opinions, or would you rather stay away from any potential controversy?
Why would a guy tell me that he’s scared of relationships and is no good for himself or for anybody else, but previously had a relationship with someone before me ? Is he trying to put me off and not trying to commit?
