What advice would you give to someone who feels nervous about confronting bullies in front of others?

What would you say to a friend who thinks you're overreacting when you're just standing up for yourself?
Why do bullies back off when someone reacts strongly, and how can you muster that confidence?
Is a successful marriage more like a 50/50 partnership or a small organization that needs one clear leader?
