How do I balance standing up for myself and keeping peace with my in-laws when small conflicts arise, like uneven gift exchanges?

Is our society too focused on economic indicators like the stock market, and does that distract from addressing deeper moral or ethical issues?
Why can’t we bully online people who robbed us? Why when we do so there are people defending the thieves lecturing us for talking bad about them? Am I missing something here?
