Why do people who enjoy freedoms sometimes criticize the very quotes and mindset that protect those freedoms?

If you were climbing in adverse conditions and exhausted, would you allow your girlfriend/boyfriend to lie down in the snow while you go look for help?
Do "ordinary" people steal more than thieves do (the ones who do it for a living)? What is your view and experience?
