What traits, other than IQ, can predict success in life and help during challenging phases?

If a civil war were to break out between the right and left in the US, are independents entitled to just ignore both sides and go about our business as if nothing is happening?
Why do some people thrive in difficult situations even if they don't have a high IQ?
