What are the emotional and psychological effects of trying to be the "perfect" person in society while hiding your true self?

I think the "self" is layered anyway but as far as emotional effects. The underlying theme is resentment. When you're always on your best behaviour and everyone else around you is allowed to act from their dysregulated state, it gets to a point where the emotional labour starts feeling like an expectation. It's how people get pigeonholed.
