Why do some people argue that fears of Republicans becoming a permanent minority are unfounded, even with increased voter turnout?

I know someone residing in my retirement community who doesn't like her handicapped husband and who berates him constantly in front of my wife. Why did she stay married to him for 53 years?
Is it true that people who are "too nice" often end up the saddest, and why might that be the case emotionally?
