How can you protect yourself from being exploited by so-called spiritual teachers who make big promises?

I got a Canada immigration status in 1991. After that, I returned to the country since I never went back. How should I get my status revived? My father passed away, so I have to stay with my mother.
What are some other situations where you might have to act in a way that seems harsh to protect someone, even if it makes you uncomfortable?
