How do you deal with working so hard for something knowing some people will be handed the same thing in life?

What are some polite ways to encourage house guests to help out with chores without causing tension?
Recently my girlfriend has been acting distant. She no longer calls or initiates texts. When I tell her I want to see her she gives me excuses, but she says she loves me. What could this all mean and what can I do?
