ADP? Adenosine diphosphate?

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is a molecule your cells use to store and transfer energy.

Here’s the clean way to think about it:

ADP = adenosine + two phosphate groups

It’s the lower-energy cousin of ATP (adenosine triphosphate)

What ADP does

When a cell uses energy, it usually does so by breaking ATP:

ATP → ADP + phosphate + energy

That released energy powers things like:

muscle contraction

nerve signaling

active transport across membranes

biosynthesis (making proteins, DNA, etc.)

Energy cycle (the big picture)

ATP = charged battery

ADP = partially discharged battery

Cells constantly recharge ADP back into ATP using energy from:

food (via cellular respiration)

oxygen (in mitochondria)

sunlight (in plants, via photosynthesis)

So life runs on a loop:

ATP → ADP → ATP → ADP, nonstop

Why ADP matters

Without ADP, you couldn’t regenerate ATP

Without ATP/ADP cycling, cells stop functioning within seconds

This system is one of the most fundamental mechanisms of life
